As summer fades away, warm sunny days turn to hazy mornings and cool afternoons. All around us, the foliage erupts into a vibrant display of colors, heralding the arrival of autumn. We are greeted by these beautiful sights at every turn. What better way to enjoy the fall weather than being outdoors? Below is a list of fall activities perfect for the whole family.

Hiking

Southwest Michigan hosts its fair share of scenic natural areas. Hiking provides an excellent opportunity to see the foliage change colors while getting a bit of fresh air and exercise. The peak time to view the color change in our area is during the month of October. The county parks of Dr TK Lawless and Newton’s Woods in Cass County have scenic lookout points and beautiful trails. Enjoy the local scenery on your own or with the company of others by venturing out with the COA Hiking Club or Walking Club. Both meet several times a month at different locations throughout the area

Hay Rides

Hayrides are a traditional fall activity. Hayrides originated when farmhands and working farm children rode loaded hay wagons back to the barn for unloading. In the 19th century, they became more than a simple necessity of gathering in the hay fields; hayrides became popular as pleasure excursions for families. If hiking doesn’t put a spring in your step, then take in the fall scenery with a relaxing hayride. On October 18, the COA will be hosting a hayride and bonfire at Happy Acres Farm. This is a family-owned and operated farm on Decatur Rd. S'mores will be included, adding to the seasonal fun.

Apple Picking

Living in the fruit belt of Michigan means there’s always a fresh, delicious, locally grown crop available. We’ve reached apple harvesting season. Apple picking is a wonderful way to enjoy some time in the great outdoors with the whole family. It’s a sensory experience, from the smell of the ripe apples, the sound of the tree leaves rustling, picking the apples, and finally taking a bite of a crisp juicy apple – all the senses are involved. Think of all your fall apple favorites: apple pie, cider, and caramel apples to name a few.

As the leaves begin to fall, there is so much to see and do. Pull on your favorite flannel, grab a buddy, and enjoy all that autumn has to offer. From fresh fruit, the explosion of color painted across the tree tops, and relaxing time spent with family, there are so many ways to embrace fall.
